Why Bee and Wasp Stings Are Common in Dubai
Living in Dubai means spending time outdoors - in villa gardens, park playgrounds, poolside areas, and desert excursions. Wasps and bees thrive in the UAE's warm climate, building nests in garden trees, under villa eaves, in air conditioning units, and around swimming pools. Stings are particularly common from March through October when insects are most active.
At Al Das Medical Clinic, we regularly treat patients - especially children - who have been stung while playing outdoors. While most stings cause only temporary pain and swelling, it's crucial to recognise the signs of a serious allergic reaction.
Bee vs. Wasp: What's the Difference?
Understanding which insect stung you helps determine the right treatment:
| Feature | Bee | Wasp |
|---|
| Stinger | Left behind in skin (barbed) | Retained - can sting multiple times |
| Behaviour | Generally docile, stings only when threatened | More aggressive, attracted to food/drinks |
| Nest location | Hives in walls, trees | Under eaves, in garden trees, AC units |
| Venom | Acidic | Alkaline |
| Pain level | Moderate, burning | Sharp, intense |
Immediate First Aid
Follow these steps immediately after a sting:
- Move away from the area - where there's one wasp, there may be a nest nearby
- Remove the stinger (bee stings only) - scrape sideways with a credit card or fingernail. Never squeeze or use tweezers, as this injects more venom
- Wash the area with soap and water
- Apply a cold compress - ice wrapped in cloth for 10-15 minutes, repeat as needed
- Elevate the limb if stung on an arm or leg
- Take pain relief - paracetamol or ibuprofen for pain; antihistamine (cetirizine) for swelling and itching
- Apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce local reaction
For children: Keep them calm, apply ice, and give age-appropriate antihistamine. Distraction works well for the initial pain.
Normal Reaction vs. Allergic Reaction
It's important to distinguish between a normal local reaction and a dangerous allergic reaction:
Normal reaction (no cause for alarm):
- Pain, redness, and swelling at the sting site
- Itching around the area
- A small white spot where the stinger entered
- Swelling that may increase over 24-48 hours then gradually resolve
- Total resolution within 5-7 days
Large local reaction (monitor closely):
- Swelling extending more than 10 cm from the sting site
- Swelling that continues to increase after 48 hours
- Redness spreading beyond the immediate area
- This is NOT anaphylaxis but may indicate higher risk for future stings
Anaphylaxis - CALL 999 IMMEDIATELY:
- Difficulty breathing, wheezing, or throat tightness
- Swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat
- Dizziness, feeling faint, or loss of consciousness
- Rapid or weak pulse
- Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhoea
- Widespread hives or flushing beyond the sting site
- Sense of impending doom
Anaphylaxis typically develops within 5-30 minutes of a sting. It is a medical emergency requiring immediate adrenaline (epinephrine) injection.
The UAE's New Nasal Adrenaline Spray
In 2025, the Emirates Drug Establishment approved neffy (epinephrine nasal spray) - the first needle-free adrenaline option in the region for emergency treatment of severe allergic reactions. This is a significant development for families with known insect sting allergies, as it's easier to administer than an EpiPen, especially for children.
Ask your doctor at Al Das whether nasal adrenaline is appropriate for your family if you have a history of severe sting reactions.
When to See a Doctor
Visit Al Das Medical Clinic if:
- It's your child's first ever sting and you want to confirm it's a normal reaction
- Swelling is significant or affecting function (e.g., stung on the hand and can't close it)
- The sting is near the eyes, mouth, or throat
- Redness is spreading or the area feels hot after 48 hours (possible infection)
- Your child has been stung multiple times (more than 3-5 stings)
- You or your child has had a previous allergic reaction to a sting and needs an allergy action plan
- You want to discuss whether you need to carry an EpiPen or nasal adrenaline
Preventing Stings in Dubai
- Check outdoor areas before children play - look under furniture, in bushes, and around pool equipment
- Cover food and drinks outdoors - wasps are attracted to sweet drinks and meat
- Avoid bright floral clothing and strong perfumes when outdoors
- Wear shoes in the garden - bees forage in ground-level flowers and clover
- Keep car windows closed when parked under trees
- Don't swat at wasps - this makes them more aggressive. Stay calm and move away slowly
- Professional nest removal - if you find a wasp nest on your property, call a Dubai Municipality-approved pest control service. Never attempt to remove it yourself
Our Doctors Can Help
Dr. Jessica Alejandra Vargas (General Practitioner, certified in Integrative Medicine) can assess sting reactions, prescribe appropriate treatment, and create personalised allergy action plans for families with sting sensitivities.
Dr. Sevdalina Velizarova (Internal Medicine Specialist, 17 years experience) manages complex allergic reactions and can advise on cardiac monitoring for patients who have experienced severe anaphylaxis from insect stings.
"The most important thing I tell parents is: know the difference between local swelling and anaphylaxis. A puffy hand is normal. Difficulty breathing or facial swelling is an emergency. If your child has ever had a reaction beyond the sting site, they need an allergy action plan and emergency medication." - Dr. Jessica Alejandra Vargas, General Practitioner
