Why Dubai Demands a Different Approach to Sun Protection

Dubai receives an average of 3,500 hours of sunshine per year, nearly double that of London or New York. The UV index regularly exceeds 11 (classified as "extreme") during summer months, and even winter readings of 4 to 6 are sufficient to cause cumulative skin damage.

For residents, this means sun protection is not a seasonal concern, it is a daily, year-round necessity.

Understanding UV Radiation

UVB rays cause sunburn and are the primary driver of skin cancer. They are strongest between 10am and 4pm and are partially blocked by glass.

UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin, breaking down collagen and elastin. They are responsible for photoageing, wrinkles, loss of firmness, and uneven pigmentation. UVA passes through clouds and glass, meaning you are exposed even on overcast days and while driving.

Visible light and infrared radiation are increasingly recognised as contributors to hyperpigmentation, particularly in darker skin tones.

Choosing the Right Sunscreen

  • SPF 50+ with broad-spectrum (UVA + UVB) protection is the minimum recommendation for Dubai
  • Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) provide immediate protection and are less likely to irritate sensitive skin
  • Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and tend to have a lighter texture, making them popular for daily wear under makeup
  • Tinted sunscreens containing iron oxides offer additional protection against visible light, particularly beneficial for melasma-prone skin

Beyond Sunscreen

SPF alone is not enough. A comprehensive sun protection strategy includes:

  1. Reapplication, Every two hours when outdoors, or immediately after swimming or sweating
  2. Protective clothing, UPF-rated fabrics, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses
  3. Seeking shade, Especially during peak UV hours (10am to 4pm)
  4. Antioxidant serums, Topical vitamin C and E provide an additional layer of defence against free radical damage
  5. Window film, Car and office windows can be fitted with UV-blocking film

Repairing Sun Damage

If damage has already occurred, our dermatology team offers:

  • Chemical peels to address hyperpigmentation and rough texture
  • Topical retinoids to stimulate collagen renewal
  • Laser treatments for sun spots and deeper pigmentation
  • IV antioxidant therapy to support skin repair from within

Annual Skin Checks

We recommend an annual full-body skin examination for all Dubai residents, particularly those with fair skin, a history of sunburn, or a family history of skin cancer. Early detection remains the most effective tool against melanoma.
