Why Dubai Demands a Different Approach to Sun Protection
Dubai receives an average of 3,500 hours of sunshine per year, nearly double that of London or New York. The UV index regularly exceeds 11 (classified as "extreme") during summer months, and even winter readings of 4 to 6 are sufficient to cause cumulative skin damage.
For residents, this means sun protection is not a seasonal concern, it is a daily, year-round necessity.
Understanding UV Radiation
UVB rays cause sunburn and are the primary driver of skin cancer. They are strongest between 10am and 4pm and are partially blocked by glass.
UVA rays penetrate deeper into the skin, breaking down collagen and elastin. They are responsible for photoageing, wrinkles, loss of firmness, and uneven pigmentation. UVA passes through clouds and glass, meaning you are exposed even on overcast days and while driving.
Visible light and infrared radiation are increasingly recognised as contributors to hyperpigmentation, particularly in darker skin tones.
Choosing the Right Sunscreen
- SPF 50+ with broad-spectrum (UVA + UVB) protection is the minimum recommendation for Dubai
- Mineral sunscreens (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) provide immediate protection and are less likely to irritate sensitive skin
- Chemical sunscreens absorb UV rays and tend to have a lighter texture, making them popular for daily wear under makeup
- Tinted sunscreens containing iron oxides offer additional protection against visible light, particularly beneficial for melasma-prone skin
